Dear Families,
Greetings! I hope that you are all staying safe and taking care of yourselves during these difficult times. These situations are not ideal, but we ARE P.S. 221 strong and we will get through this together! To help ease the transition into remote learning, I have put together a bit of a “cheat sheet” for you to help describe what this will look like and what will be expected.
To begin work on Google Classrooms, you will get a login and password mailed to you. If you have any trouble logging in, please forward your concerns to me and I will help you. When you log in, you will see an opening screen. There are several menu options, but the two that you and your child should be most concerned with are “Stream” and “Classwork”, described in the image below.
Stream is pretty user friendly; it includes a prompt and a place to comment a response.
The “Classrooms” tab is multifaceted, so here are some instructions on how to use it. There will be a list of assignments. For each, you will be given the option of viewing the assignment. Click on that as shown below.
Once in the assignment, you will see a list of instructions. You will also see attachments if there are pictures, worksheets, or documents that the children can use to help them with the assignment. There may be links in the instruction set; please look carefully and copy and paste any needed into your browser.
There are always TWO options for uploading an assignment:
1 – You can have the children work by hand, photograph their work, and send a picture file of their work to me. Look at the image provided to see how to do that. If you do this, please type “Work attached” into the Microsoft word response document described below. In that way, if you intend to send work and it doesn’t go through, I can follow up and let you know so that you can send it again.
2 – You can type your responses into the Microsoft word document that will be provided for you. This will be especially convenient for writing assignments if your child is comfortable with keyboarding, as well as for any reading or social studies assignments that require your children to answer questions. For math, you can type in your child’s answers if you are unable to attach a photo, although, if possible, photographs of your child’s work are recommended.
Please view the attached photo to familiarize yourself with where you can find these components.
Additionally, here is a general layout of what you can expect to see in most cases.
DAILY ASSIGNMENTS will include math and reading. Ideally, it is expected that an assignment for these content strands is turned in each day, but more will be described about this below.
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS will be given 2-3 times per week. You can manage these on your own, but, as writing is a skill that usually requires more planning, more time is given for each assignment. Each writing assignment will include a powerpoint slideshow of instructions and models. You can simply open the slideshow and ignore the other images if you have access to powerpoint. If you can’t access powerpoint, you can look at the instructions, which will be copied and pasted straight from the powerpoint, and screenshots of the slides provided to help you complete the assignment.
SOCIAL STUDIES will be given early in the week and will be a series of research-based tasks that must be turned in by the end of the week.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING will be in the form of a welcome forum. A prompt will be given on the main page (click on your class or on streaming and your children can comment a quick and simple response.
As far as time management, please note that due dates are given, but we are flexible at this time. If there are conflicts or urgent situations that prevent your child from giving work in on the recommended due date, we are willing to accept it at a later time and do not hold these due dates to strict standards. You know your family best and we recommend that you use the resources given to you so that you can help your children to grow and be challenged at home in the way that works best for your household.
There will be an option to send me private messages on Google Classrooms. To facilitate matters, please forward me all of your questions and concerns there. This will enable all communication to take place on one platform and avoid the possibility that I will miss a concern.
I know this is a lot, and it is a work in progress. With practice, I’m sure we will all do just fine with this system. Please let me know if you have any trouble logging in or if there is anything else I can help you with at this time!
I hope to see you all on Google classrooms starting on Monday.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Soldatich-Crawford

Dear Team 4-208,
Since schools are closed due to the Coronavirus, we are going to begin remote learning. Teachers will go into school this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, to learn how to teach you from our homes. I am looking forward to it, and hope you are too!
For now, enjoy your family, practice Social Distancing, and being safe. If you simply wish to do some schoolwork, feel free to do any of the math or ELA pages for some extra practice. If you do decide to do them, only do the pages in the books that come before the ones we have done so far.
I look forward to connecting with you online in the next couple of days.
Love,
Mrs. Soldatich-Crawford
Our reading program for the year is Journeys. We enjoy getting lost in a new story each other week, and meeting new characters. For the next two weeks, we will be reading Jose! Born to Dance, a Biography, by Susanna Reich.
I am so very lucky to let you know, Class 4-208 has 2 Class Moms. Mrs. Gildea -- mom of Maggie, and Mrs. Nieves -- mom of Cristian.
Spring Parent Teacher Conference appointments will be available in the early morning, as early as 7:30, 7:45, 8:00. Please let me know if either of these time slots work better for you. The appointment does not have to be the same day as the other Parent Teacher Conferences. As long as your child has their report card, we can meet.
